I once visited a Lionel O gauge layout that was about 12 feet square. It was
suspended from the ceiling with cables on all four corners and could be raised
or lowered using an electric motor in the attic. When raised, the bottom of
the layout was almost flush with the ceiling in the family room. It protruded
perhaps three or four inches and was nicely painted and looked just fine.
Pushing the button caused the layout to slowly descend and when it reached an
appropriate level, the legs were attached and then it was lowered all the way
down and the cables could be unhitched and raised back up into the attic. The
entire process was reversed when finished playing with the RR. The kids and
wife both found this arrangement very satisfactory and had no problems with it.
Of course, the family room ceiling and attic had major structural revisions
complete with installation of the electric motor and gearing arrangement and
pulleys and the wiring of the up/down switch located in the family room. But
it worked and worked well.
To answer your question about what kind of foundation structure to use, I have
not a clue. But I do know it can be done.
