Hi Gary. Re your layout construction, heavy lumber becomes it's own enemy and
you don't want the weight anyway. I'd look for some aluminum channels in place
of 2X4's or L-girders as the undersupport for your layout. With that in place
you could then proceed to build the layout with luan plywood braced with 1X2's
and topped with sheets of styrene foam.
That's the approach I'd take
