I just received my SHS 2-8-0 and in the flesh/metal and plastic it is at least
as impressive as I had been led to believe by looking
at Don's website. Haven't run it yet--that will require a DCC installation at
some kind soul's venue--but I don't doubt it will run
as well as my SHS diesel switchers.
I could wish the drivers were sprung, but that is purely a preference--there
has been much debate over the years whether scale models
really require them for good operation. Basing the locomotive on a
carefully-chosen mid-size prototype for a class I railroad also demonstrates
excellent marketing instincts (most of the non-B&O choices also look reasonably
close to their prototypes, short of extensive redetailing);
I could have wished Weaver had been equally astute when they produced their
freelance mass-market 2-8-0 in O scale some years ago.
