  Hi Earl, Homasote is pretty tough stuff , I've got scrap pieces in my barn 
that look fine after 20 years or more so I'd say it depends on your layout 
location. If the existing wooden stuff in the room looks fine then homasote 
will be fine, if you got moisture problems already then you might want to paint 
the roadbed but I doubt it really will help, better to fix any room problems 
instead. Paint is not a moisture barrier long term any way, painted wooden 
boats swell and shrink just fine, only full saturation with epoxy resin can 
mummify a wooden structure....dave
