Sadly I don't think it really matters what they put in the ads unless it's
ads for new mass produced product. Experienced modelers know what S is and they
know the difference between flyer and scale but they also know it's hard to get
what you want to build a layout with 80 car production runs.
Product on the shelf or on ebay now days is what makes modelers switch
scales. I modeled for about 40 years in HO and O scale before the beautiful SHS
PS2 sitting on the shelf at my local hobby shop convinced me to give S scale a
serious look. SHS, American models, PRS, and now DesPlaines make the products
that make it possible. I've always been attracted to simple modeling and
uncluttered scenes so S can work for me but for many HO or N scale guys the
sparseness is a turn off so they don't get beyond that point.
Since we don't have a lot of new product to promote the scale side with I
think the way to go is for scale modelers to build things and write articles
and submit photos of high quality modeling so that others will realize that it
is possible to model in S at level equal to the finest in other scales.
Something simple like Lance Mindheim's Miami switching layout could have been
done in S scale just as well as in HO scale and would give S instant
credibility for relatively little cost. For the older era modeler something
like a full scale layout of the DL&W's 25th street south Brooklyn operation
would do the same thing, and there's already enough S product to replicate it
realistically.
Instead of the trees we need to look at the forest, build broad demand
instead of worrying about one more limited run for the same small group....dave
