. . . . . . . On the right hand side of the ad is our logo with the couplers
containing the word United. On the left side of the ad are the typical
words---American Flyer, Hi-Rail, Scale and Narrow Gauge. So what we've done
is say we United and then one inch away we're saying we're divided into four
segments. . . . . . . . . .

I wasn't active when the original NASG (unincorporated) was started, but I
understand the founders were people like Frank Titman, Wally Collins, Ed
Shoemacher, Bernie Thomas -- all attempting to create a real railroad
effect in 1/64 scale. Whether using "scale" or AF-compatible track & wheel
standards, they were united in a general pursuit (And I think they all
modelled standard gauge.)
I don't know when the NASG adopted that "American Flyer, Hi-Rail, Scale and
Narrow Gauge" slogan, but it did not and does not reflect the thinking of
the founders as I understand it.

. . . . . . . . AF is simply hi-rail with a brand name attached. . . . . . .

Here's another opinion. "American Flyer" is a euphemism for toy train
collecting and operating. Their prototype is the American Flyer catalogues
of 1946 - 1966, while mine is the BN, BNSF, NS, CR, TTX Company &c. Yours
may be the NYC, B&O, or any of a hundered other railroads.
The great hope was that we all be united, but things evolve. Maybe the best
we can do is try to understand.

. . . . . . But putting that aside--why not just S Scale-United! . . . . . .

Why not indeed.
