Charles B. "Chuck" Porter passed away on June 28th; he was 79 years old. Chuck
was well known in Midwest S scale and rail fan communities and an active member
of this egroup since its inception in 1999. He was a fixture at NASG
conventions, always in his rumpled little hat with a serious camera around his
neck. Chuck's Christmas cards, adorned with one of his rail photos and
containing his friendly missive were a joy to receive each year. He was fast
to make fiends and a great conversationalist on any subject, in or out of the
hobby. Chuck was one of those few truly good people who make the hobby and
indeed life much richer. He will be missed....

At a live steam Santa Train event in Plymouth a few years ago, it was snowing
like crazy and I was jostling with seemingly a bazillion other "rail fans"
trying to get a photo of the train leaving town. Out of nowhere I heard a
friendly greeting; it was Chuck and his wife Pat, driven 80 miles in the snow
just to take a picture... I'm posting the photo I took that day in memory of
Chuck. He found a very different vantage point and later sent me his photo...
it was a lot better !! You know when you are in the presence of someone
special...!

With apologies to and to paraphrase from David P. Morgan, a better writer than
I; "Time now to close the book. Like a railroad conductor, I've punched your
ticket, hopefully pointed out a high spot or two on the journey ahead and
checked my Hamilton against yours. It's time to retire to the last plush
walkover in the coach, listen in on the insistent whistle and hard-working
stack up front and sleep in a world of rail joints, coupled cars, steam and
diesel... and be better for it. Travel easy Chuck.... "
