Hi Ed,

I am not saying that Smith & Sons is not a good ballast, as my comments where
not directed at that company. I do not know their product, never heard of
them until today.

My comment was mainly gear to the comments I hear all the time, “I use this
because of the cost” and that is not directed at Roger in anyway. I just hear
that all the time. People may have reasons on why they choose a lower cost
product, but when I see or hear of one spending 1000s on track, engines,
buildings, rolling stock, I do not understand that route.

I was able to get a sample of ballast from Classic Trains and that was good
enough.

If I was doing ballast today and never heard of Classic either, I would get
samples of ballast from as many suppliers as I can.

If one does not want to send you a sample, which is not much, that is not good.

get samples, make a decision.

Again, I quote Roger Carp of Classic Toy Trains, he likes my layout because the
ballast is just right for S, as it is advertised as S ballast. And Roger
does know a bit of what he is talking about or he would not be a editor of that
magazine. And he is a S person.

Who ever was looking for ballast, good luck.

Mike

Mike / Chuck,

Smith & Sons does provide ballast for S-Scale, they provide ballast for all
scales. Just because a company markets products for a particular scale doesn't
mean that is necessary the right choice, I have always heard that one should
use the next scale smaller when it comes to ballast therefore HO scale ballast
would be correct for S-Scale. The best way to deterime what is correct is to
obtain samples and actually install it on your layout and evaluate the results,
usually ballast is slightly darker after it has been glued in place.

I echo the recomendation of Mike on the use of classic train ballast. Its
nice to find something scenery related made for s scale.
