Grade crossing accidents are an unfortunate part of railroading.
Thus far, I have been involved in 6 grade crossing accidents. Thank God none
of them resulted in fatalities, but you never forget that sickening "BAM"
sound when the nose of your engine hits the automobile (pick-up, or what
have you)... nor will you forget the sight of the vehicle spinning into the
ditch, or in view just below the pilot with the tires plowing and spraying
gravel as you push in down the track at umpteen MPH... or whatever the
visual result of the impact happens to be.
I hope I can finish my career without killing someone, but with the roads so
full of absolute morons now, I may not be able to accomplish that goal.
Still, though, I would rather face hitting a vehicle than a pedestrian.
Those are bad. Speaking of which, remind me to tell you guys about the
missing parts we had to find a few years ago... or not!
