Grain isn't the only commodity to require 'grain doors'. Continental Paper
up in Whitewood, SD (honest, that's the name of the town) would load 40 and 50
ft box cars with wood chips. C Vision Productions has a video about the old
C&NW 'Cowboy Line' that shows these cars in service. Most did not have the
regular doors, just the heavy cardboard 'grain doors'. I am thinking that the
reason these were used is that the wind blows most of the time in southwest
South Dakota and northwest Nebraska, plus they were cheap and available.
Anyway, that would make an excellent excuse for having a BTS lumber mill on
the layout.
BTW, the last I knew, Ming the Merciless worked for my local railroad, the
Arkansas and Missouri.
