The only kinsman Kits that came pre painted and lettered were some of the
reefers and express reefers. Not all of the kits contained a pair of the
Northeastern trucks and then those that did came with the old NMRA wheel
standards and were either a form of Andrews or Bettendorf style. The metal
detail parts are also still available from Ye Ole Huff an Puff.
The only pre-pained and lettered freight reefer sides I have ever seen that
was useful is the Swift reefer. It is possible to cut off 3/16 of the height
and still use those sides. The biggest flaw in the pre painted Kinsman freight
reefers is the incorrect height.
I doubt any of these kits have that much value as a completed model. I don't
buy completed kits but Ed Loizeaux does. To each his own. I get no enjoyment
from just owing any of this stuff. For me it is all about building the models
and not buying the models.
I asked about the Scenery Unlimited kits on this list and had more than
enough responses. The Scenery Unlimited reefer kits were pretty much a Kinsman
kit in a different box and the later run of Scenery Unlimited kits had the much
nicer Grandt details. Portlines Hobbies has about 13 of them in stock for $20 a
kit. Somebody should buy all of them and hoard them. Then one day 10 years from
now they can sell them for $25!
I was also just informed that only the late production Kinsman Passenger car
kits came with a hollow clerestory roof. All of the earlier run of kits came
with a solid roof stock. Maybe I have that backwards though?
