Rollie et al --
The superstructure components in the Super Scale 600-HP switcher kit was
comprised of sheet copper components coated with lead or solder on their
backsides. (I have one.) The copper appears to have been electro-deposited in
female dies, similar to the Exacta/Super Scale passenger-car sides and ends
from the same era. The solder backing provides much-needed stiffness to the
copper.
The chassis is the lead casting from the Super Scale Alco 1000-HP switcher.
However, it was altered at the factory --selectively "damaged"-- in order to
fit within the copper footplate/side-sill. Under-the-floor Miller power trucks
were the intended power source.
FYI, there are a couple of Miller power trucks currently being auctioned on
eBay. One, a single-motor truck, is mislabeled "Dayton" by the auctioneer.
Miller power trucks are useful only as collector items. They have only two
speed settings: "mercilessly faster" and "coast."
