I have no idea how many S-scale modelers are out there. Regardless of the
number, I wish we had a few more. I like to kitbash, model from scratch, and
model the unique prototypes. I suggested to John Whitmore that KASLO produce a
PS-1, and apparently others encouraged him as well. Now we have a PS-1.
Whether it meets everyone's expectations I do not know.
When I received my first three kits, I thought I'd never be able to assemble
one. Well, I tried and got it together, gaining confidence that I can crank
out additional models of that prototype. I ordered only one--regretably--B&O
wagontop box car. That I have yet to tackle, but Bud Rindfleisch has convinced
me its doable. He has already assembled more than one, I believe.
I ordered two SAL B-7 cars, not wanting the project--after all the effort that
John Degnen put into it--to fail. Although I await the two kits, I am pretty
sure I'll be happy with the quality. Jim King does excellent work. I'll never
be able to create what the late James Konas, Jr. did with his brass models of
Chicago Great Western steam locomotives, but I aspire to approach the quality
of his craftsmanship in creating rolling stock. No, I haven't arrived, but I
shoot toward the goal and enjoy doing it.
Until SHS gets up and running I have--and I doubt I can be alone in
this--plenty to keep me busy. Along the way, I have noticed a phenomenon that
goes beyond the confines of S scale: Even in HO not that many people want to
assemble a kit. I am willing to bet that dozens of Sunshine kits sit on the
shelves of HO modelers. There's a strong predilection for ready-to-run models
out there.
Perhaps as we see the years pass us by, we fear we will never assemble all the
kits we have, so how can we purchase additional ones? Well, no answer there,
but for me crafting a kit is enjoyable, part of the fun of the hobby. While we
are alive and can still enjoy the hobby, let's just do that.
And maybe we should be thankful taht Lionel has tried something even if we
think we won't like it. It's a step in the right direction.
