John, what is the reason you have heard people say is why S is the perfect
size?

I have repeatedly heard it said that many modelers find S to be the perfect
size because it is large enough to handle and see detail, but small enough
that home layouts can be practical.

As for the comment that small length cars are preferred compared to larger
length cars, I think it applies to any gauge. I prefer to have 2 bay
hoppers rather than 3 bay hoppers because I can get more more cars to fit in a
siding. This would be true whether I was modeling in S or HO, or anything
else. This may not apply to folks who have the room and resources to have
unlimited size layouts, but they are in the minority.

Revisiting this old thread with another thought... I have to ask if this
(below) means that S scalers (in general) should be willing to settle for
shorter cars (and trains) because of the space they require? If this is the
case, then how is it that people see S scale as the perfect scale? I see this
as a HUGE negative. I don't want to be limited to modeling shortlines and
early-era cars and locos... and not everyone is as limited for space as the
 next person.

Subject: Re: {S-Scale List} Let's Get Modern

Problem with intermodal is it takes up a lot of room. The trains are long
and the yards huge so it takes a lot of space to not look cartoonish. A
modern shortline can fit into a much more typical layout space and the variety
of cars can be quite interesting.
