I own a couple of the more recent SSA tankcars. I owned one of the
originals when Larry was selling them--had it for a few years then sold
it to Roger Nulton. Roger discovered to his and my amazement that it
was only lettered on one side!! Maybe Roger can sell it as a rare
collectable factory mistake!
Anyway, I've been happy with the cars except for the dome's top. I
wonder if the old AF one wouldn't be a better match--what do you think
Pieter?

It is possible a G gauge model falls somewhere between the original
Varney HO car and the Larry's tooling. If you look at a Varney,
Lifelike (pre-Proto 2000) or Walthers tank car dome top, it is
identical to the SSA model (and only somewhat related to the
prototype). I own a Varney and a Walthers car, and the Walthers
underframe is likewise identical in design to the SSA model, and not
because they are both models of the same full sized car....
I didn't know that Don had planned a tank car. A pity, because I'm
sure an S Helper version would have been superior. We need the tank
car, as there is no other model close in S, but it is the weak link in
the SSA line.
