Don Thompson and and Mike Ferraro deserve a hearty hip-hip-hurrah and round of
applause for all they've done in helping to bring S Scale out of the wilderness
over the years. I'm sure they will enjoy their "retirement."
So, now we face a new future with Lionel's more aggressive approach to American
Flyer and MTH's purchase of SHS. Both companies have extensive prototype
research files in their arsenal, but more importantly, the distribution
networks and the ability to get product into the stores.
Plus, MTH's DCS system already has DCC compatibility with the Protosounds 3.0
and Lionel is actively working on a DCC interface for their TMCC and Railsounds.
S may finally become more of a bona-fied stable product line and less of a
curiosity. We may also benefit with more structures and other lineside
non-train items.
But, the $164,000.00 question is what happens with American Models and S Scale
America through all this? They will surely benefit from increased interest in
S, but will they remain independant? Would they want to remain independant?
The future's a little cloudy here. We'll have to wait and see.
Still, it's a good time to be in S.
