In my case, the workshop area was moved from the basement to a shed, which
required an additional new garden shed. Sawdust and trains (or in the
house) is never a good idea. And the laundry was moved from the basement to
the first floor, which also involved redoing the bathrooms. Besides more
railroad space, everyone is happy with these changes.

At least I didn't need to dig out a crawlspace into a basement like John
Bortz. Although I could expand if I expanded the area under an addition
from crawlspace to basement. In reality I have enough work in my existing
basement area to keep me busy.

If I was a bachelor, my ideal space would probably be a barn with an
attached efficiency apartment.

Gents...

All serious S guys have solved the lack of space problem by poking holes in
the walls (aka tunnels) and expanding into other areas. Roger Nulton
(garage) and Ed Loizeaux (family room) have done this. Dick Karnes tore
down his layout and negotiated more space elsewhere (basement) and rebuilt.
Mr. Lane, Jr. added on to his house so the shop equipment could be moved in
order to have a larger layout. I am sorry, but "lack of space" no longer
qualifies as a legitimate excuse for not buying something you really want.
Let's get on with the program......
