Friends,
My mailman just delivered an advanced copy of Great Model Railroads 2013
Calendar. Our California based New York Central railroad made a very
nice appearance. So Ed's PA's could now be called Miss April!
Further down the year is a reprint of one of the shots of the late
modeler and good friend Ken Stanley who modeled in Sn3. Unfortunately
he was in the process of selling his house the day that shot was taken,
so the layout was history as soon as my film was processed. I had a
great time doing that series of shots and for the longest time we didn't
have any motive power. Ken, like most modelers did the Colorado roads
during the 30's thru the 50's. Ken then backdated everything to the
Turn of the Century. Those engines arrived with a real glossy paint
job--probably very authentic but a pain to photograph in a scene.
Ken had the amazing ability to put together structures and even rolling
stock very quickly. Also, being a geologist helped him make realistic
scenery that would be correct for the area. Unfortunately Ken decided
to go a bit larger and switched to On3, but I'm not certain that he
really liked what he ended up with. I had bumped into him in a hobby
shop, where he was buying a standard gauge boxcar to give his
interchange some business. He went home and the next day died of a
heart attack while his wife and daughter were on a trip.
Anyway, I think it would help our chosen scale if we support Kalmbach by
purchasing a copy and then letting them know that we appreciate seeing
some S presented in the calendar. I could easily be mistaken, but I
believe this is the first year that S has had two pages. Nearly all the
photos are well done and one by Paul Dolkos of the "Unnamed Eastern
Railroad" is my personal favorite. The detail, the photo position and
the lighting make this outstanding.
To continue, to be published in any of the better RR publications is a
bit like entering a modeling contest. Those that spend all their time
putting together resin or wooden kits like the prototype modeler's
events, while someone who spends years building his empire in the
basement is also entering a contest or sorts. Then of course, there are
those rare individuals who do all of them and get their NMRA Masters' to
boot!
