Sorry for being ambiguous.  No I do not want them both coming out with  
exactly the same models.  
 
My issue is that we want them competing like crazy to expand the whole S  
market any way they can.  And for the market to absorb all the new product,  
they have to expand the market.  Obviously they are interested in drawing  
the younger modelers as seen by their announcements of modern diesels, even  
though us old fogies like me will probably never buy any of the modern  
stuff.  
 
But if they expand the total S market, the demand for everything goes up,  
and things we only dreamed of ever seeing may pop up, both old and modern  
models.  And easy to install signals, turnouts, etc.

Again all conjecture right now….  but if MTH & Lionel were to come out with 
new locomotives each at the same  time why would you want them to be the 
SAME locomotive? The rumor mill churned  up that MTH is looking at the SD70 
when Lionel announced it earlier this year.  I would prefer 2 new and 
different items.
