Hi Rachael; I guess I thought your question related specifically to the SMSG layout, which I know nothing about except what was shown here.
Bill already mentioned Tomalco, who have a nice line of scale track including code 83 and code 70 rail flex (for lighter lines or sidings and spur tracks), as well as a variety of turnouts and crossings. The latter are from BK Enterprises, made like you would hand build a turnout yourself, and supplied with laser cut tie sets all spaced correctly. You need to fasten the rail to the ties on installation. Another source in S is 'S'cenery Unlimited, who are exclusive importers of S scale Shinohara track and turnouts in code 100. You may be familiar with Shinohara products from HO or N scale. 'S'cenery Unlimited has flex track, #6 and #8 turnouts with plastic ties. http://www.sceneryunlimited.net/ These are probably the two most common systems, and they can be mixed (so you could use 'S'cenery Unlimited and fill gaps in the line for turnouts and crossings with Tomalco, for example. Other lines include Custom Trax, which comes on pre-ballasted bendable roadbed, and Tom's Turnouts which were compatible with the S Helper "S-Trax". These latter two are a bit in limbo with production problems and the sale to MTH. "S-Trax" used a larger rail size to be compatible with high-rail wheels, and is correct for heavy duty mainlines (patterned after Pennsy track), but not for lighter duty. Lionel is now offering their own track similar to "S-Trax". American Models has track and turnouts, but it uses even larger rail (code 148) and so is not used by many scale modelers. You can see the Custom Trax product here: http://www.custmtrax.com/ There are a few other producers, but most are non-scale (Flyer or High-rail) products. I hope this is helpful. Pieter E.
