Hi Brooks, One of the reasons the Shays and Climaxes are available so cheap is that they have developed a reputation for splitting gears and retaining rings. Bachmann has supposedly made retooled parts available, but to install them is not that easy, since it requires disassembling the drive. Of course, if you are looking to convert a loco from HO (or On30) to S standard gauge or Sn3, you'll probably need to do this anyway. O you could take the easy way out, and model it in Sn42...
