The 3-truck HO Shay has been converted. Backwoods Miniatures at one time would take the 3-truck Shay and convert to a Sn3 2-truck for you, with a new cab, tank, etc.
At the NASG convention this year, Doug Miller had one he converted to standard gauge with new bolsters and extending the axles with sleeves. His Miller Engineering and Design has laser-cut kits for a wooden cab and he had them at the convention. I believe he also had standard gauge bolsters or will have them and is supposed to have Sn3 bolsters sometime in the future. (I was only interested in the narrow gauge ones.) At one time, Bill Banta also had an S scale laser-cut cab kit for this locomotive. I've heard of converting it to Sn3 by just regauging the left side wheels for the total difference, although I think this would be making it a little lopsided. In reality, as a 3-truck Shay it is a little too small in S, but it will work nicely for a large 2-truck Shay with more modifications. Of course, maybe your railroad had light rail and wanted a three truck Shay to spread out the weight. Shays were custom ordered and some of them didn't fit the catalog class system. NWSL makes some replacement gears for the Bachmann Shays and it is probably a good idea to use them if building one. For more online Shay information, look at: http://www.shaylocomotives.com/index.html BTW, I did look at Bachmann's HO Climax, but thought it was too small, again a truck problem. Has anybody considered the Bachmann HO Shay for conversion? I always thought I'd prefer too small to too big wheels. -Michael Eldridge ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
