The twisting happens during the mold breakout just after the parts are
cast. It is impossible to prevent on any , "open Finger" type of casting that
is long and thin. I'm having the same problem with the PFE reefer steps. Some
of them look like pretzels and I throw them away. When I did the Miner brake
gear I had to make more of the brake release lever since the same thing
happened to that part. The choice of, "brass" alloy helps a little, but only a
little.
The option is to change the master pattern and make up new molds. Then comes
the problem of getting good master waxes to make the parts. Adding runners and
I think what John called , "fine leads", make getting good waxes out of a
complicated mold with little round rods running all over the place very
difficult.
I've sold so few of the PFE stirrup steps that I have no intention of
redoing my patterns and molds. The PFE turned out to be the most time consuming
project.
