   One can do pretty much the same thing in S scale using PRS kits instead of 
Intermountain. It's a good way to get a lot of hobby time in without spending 
too much on equipment, the longer it takes to build one car the less cars one 
has to buy.
  As for car lists anyone can make those up for their own specific location 
either real or imagined. If it's a real town just look for photos of the 
railroad around the town and see what was in the trains and yards.If it's an 
imaginary town just make up a traffic flow based on the industries and then 
look for photos of the kind of cars that served that kind of industry in your 
modeled location and era....DaveBranum
