For building model railroad layouts, a faster solution is to purchase kiln
dried wood at the outset. All the moisture is removed and what you take home
is dimensionally stable. No problems at all with shrinkage.
The alternative, as George states, is to wait a good long time for the moisture
to evaporate or disappear some other way. Since most of us will not want to
spend the money on wood and then wait three years before using it, I would
suggest that buying kiln dried wood at the lumber yard is a good alternative.
In this area, kiln dried wood costs about 20% more than greeen wood.
