The "last built" PVMR layout has 1.5 inch foam as the top, with 1/4 inch
Luan plywood underneath for screws to hold down track, scenery etc. Has
worked well, this layout is carried up and down stairs and hauled in trucks
with no issues so far and is much lighter than the 1/2" topped Homosote it
replaced. We did NOT glue the foam to the Luan so that we could easily
replace it if design or damage required.
Table top height is 30 inches to allow viewing by our younger, more
vertically challenged guests. We also have Plexiglass sides to keep "little
fingers" from getting "little people" in trouble.

The 3 rail layout is the one with the new foam top, "S" is now scheduled
for rebuild with foam tops as well. HO THOMAS started out on foam.

Still obsessing about how to support track. I'm intrigued by Jim Six's
solution of mounting it directly on ceiling tile scenery
