   It has advantages and dis-advantages. It doesn't split across the grain but 
it splits between layers if one drives nails or screws into the end grain 
wrong. About 1/3 of the grain is always running the wrong direction which stops 
splitting but can be a problem if it is ripped too narrow. It's easier to find 
good plywood but if one needs a couple of 1X4's it's easier to rip them from a 
1X8 than from a sheet of plywood. The trick is learning to use everything and 
choosing what works best for a particular situation depending on product 
availability, tool access, and time constraints. I'm building a new N scale 
shelf layout and framed it with a 1/2 inch plywood top on 1X4 pine box grid, 
it's way stronger than it needs to be for N scale but I had all the material 
here in the shop so could assemble it all in a couple of hours.....DaveBranum
