It will all depends on how good it runs and speed control. There's an O scale
version available from NWSL right now for $75 per truck with gear ratios
offered for 0-40, 0-60 or 0-80 SMPH.....IIRC. I don't know anyone who has tried
them but I would be very interested in hearing first hand how they perform.
It's an interesting concept and with a mfg. like KATO working on it we might
just see it prefected. If it works in HO it would certainly work in the larger
scales and solve some of the problems of trying to stuff all the modern
electronics inside the loco shell with the motor and driveline. For any modeler
trying to be as prototypically accurate as possible, having powered trucks is
about as close as you can get.
But, I can certainly understand your concerns Dave. I'm not a supporter of the
current China Drive by any means. But, in O scale, the problem isn't the drive
as much as using the wrong gear ratio, so the 3R trains can still run 150-200
SMPH like the old Lionel trains did. All depends if you operate toy trains or
scale model trains.
