I look at it as more of a statement that Kato is going toward the toy train
side of the equation. The compromises needed to do it that way are not in the
best interest of the scale operator. Kato knows how to make great running locos
with large single motors, well designed gears, truck equalization, etc. but it
looks like they are making that secondary to providing more interior room and
an easier to assemble product? Atlas did the same thing when they first got
into O scale. They made a great single motored switcher that was much like an
SHS switcher, then the toy train guys started complaining about it running too
slow( it ran at scale speeds not 200 MPH) and that it didn't make loud enough
noise, etc. so atlas switched to twin motor high speed gearing on the following
locos. I see now that MTH is gonna "improve" the drive of the SHS switcher?
