  I saw those Bachmann truck conversion photos and they looked very nice. IIRC 
he made new bolsters and told what kind of wheel sets he used. Probably was 
posted here on the list or maybe on the S scale SIG site as I don't read much 
other places.  
  You can get early era data decal sheets from Rail Graphics and then you'd 
just need to find road  reporting marks and numbers. You might also look into 
Clover house and see if they offer early era S scale dry transfers? The nice 
thing about early era cars is they are easy to scratch build since most were 
just common wooden construction plus a few metal fittings. Some of the narrow 
gauge parts should even work....DaveBranum
