Dave....
Yep, they did say that. But it was not a NYC SD70. They obtained a UP SD70.
Here is why some confusion exists: Some SD70 locos have an alternate product
number in the Lionel catalog for a scale-wheeled version. Other SD70 locos do
NOT have an alternate product number for a scale-wheeled version.
If the alternate product number is ordered, the customer will receive a loco
with factory-installed scale wheels. If there is no alternate product number,
the customer will receive a loco with AF wheels.
The key to figuring all this out is to READ THE LIONEL CATALOG. The 2012
catalog is online and the AF product line has its own catalog which is separate
from the O gauge catalog. Another way to figure things out is to contact your
friendly authorized Lionel dealer and ask questions.
In my case, I checked the Charles Ro web site which lists all the newer paint
schemes for the SD70 which are not yet in the Lionel catalog. So I know the
NYC version will be coming sooner or later even though it is not shown in the
Lionel catalog.
I then ordered both the NYC and NS versions of the SD70 from my favorite dealer.
As a general rule of thumb, the UP Heritage Series has alternate product
numbers for scale-wheeled versions. Also as a general rule of thumb (the other
thumb), the NS Heritage Series does not have alternate product numbers for
scale-wheeled versions. But don't trust this email, check for yourself to be
certain.
It is my belief, although not publically stated yet by Lionel, that scale
wheels for the SD70 will soon be announced as a separate product with its own
product number. If/when that happens, I will buy the scale wheels and my NYC
SD70 will run on my NMRA-compliant track and the AF wheels will be up for sale
or swap.
It is only a matter of time before the new Lionel catalog comes out and we can
hope that it will clarify the scale-wheel 'situation'.
Dave, since you are interested in the modern stuff, I would suggest you simply
purchase the modern SD70 of your choice and worry about the scale wheels later.
Worst case, you can join me with having some wheels machined to fit. I do not
see this as a major problem, but just something that needs to be considered.
As Bill Lane says, "If you cannot buy it, build it." Good advice!
Hope this helps...Ed Loizeaux
