Now that we've had some time to digest the 2013 MTH and Lionel Flyer catalogs,
a few thoughts:
MTH:
About what I expected. I anticipated 4 roadnames for the F3's, there are six.
I'm interested in the Santa Fe F3's, but don't know if I'll bite yet.
I also expected 4-6 different types of freight cars, so no surprises here.
Regards to pricing: Given the current economic conditions, do we seriously
think that IF Don Thompson & Co. would have been able to reboot SHS on their
own, the prices would have remained where they were 2-3 years ago before S-K
fired them?
Lionel/Flyer:
I'm disappointed. Perhaps my personal expectations were too high.
The new GE's should be every bit as good as the SD70's, I would have liked to
see some "companions" offered to the regular railroad roadnames of the
previously released SD70's.
I guess Lionel's striking while the NS Heritage iron is hot and that's what's
sucked up all the potential. The lack of the MKT and WP SD70's seems to
indicate the UP Heritage iron has cooled.
At least there is a definite statement about scale wheels being available for
the diesels through customer service. Would have been nice to have a part
number and pricing info, though.
I was also hoping to see one or two new scale freight cars announced.
Oh well, there's been a management change at the top of Lionel LLC. This seems
to happen each time the American Flyer brand is looking up. (Coincidence???
Hmmm.) There's been rumors this would be announced at York, but it seems
nobody's talking yet.
There's a chance we may have already lost what little we've gained with Lionel.
Time will tell.
