I am an advocate for modules or a sectional design for your "permanent" home layout, even if you have no intentions of taking it on the road to train shows and conventions. The advantage besides the obvious of it is reasonably portable is it is SIMPLE. You get trains running faster without getting bogged down in a life time of carpentry before you turn a wheel.
Things have been way slow lately over at S-Mod http://groups.yahoo.com/group/S-Mod/ but that is for following the NASG S-Mod standards. I took a lot of my S-Mod experience and made my layout.
