Bill, You might have been better off keeping the Sunset front steps. I
replaced the front steps on the AM gp-9's some years ago and found that
two units won't couple with standard Kadee's (#5). I had to use some
long shank couplers to avoid problems on curves. I think the BTS
castings might be on the large side.
I also used the BTS stanchions and found them kinda soft, but like you I
messed up the originals early on. However I think they are correct in
size--the Sunsets that is!. I think I purchased some of the S Scale
America which are stored in a very safe place right now. I believe they
correspond closely to the Sunset originals.

Photo 1 is after I stripped everything off the pilots. Photo 2 is how
I had to modify it to accept the BTS steps. I also had to machine the
back of the steps a bit. Photos 3 & 4 are showing some forward motion.
It looks MUCH better with the BTS castings.
It is back in the box now for another day. Some O Scale is calling me
next. I have real tonnage of BTS parts but not all I need for this. I
have to place an order when funds allow......
Thank You,
Bill Lane
