I grew up with American Flyer S gauge trains, and 12 years ago I
went into one of our largest hobby stores to buy an American Flyer
set to put around our Christmas tree for my daughter. I found the
cheapest set was $600, no steam locomotives, no track, and no
transformer! I was then told you cannot buy s gauge track anymore by
the store manager. So I then bought an LGB starter set for $275. I
kept adding to it, and adding to it, but it never tricked my trigger.
$6000.00 later, I tore up all the track, houses, and accesories, and
traded it for old Lionel trains, cars and accesories. Noting I only
got 50 cents on the dollar for my LGB, and paid top dollar on the
lionel stuff. 4 years later, after many more purchases, I sold off
all my Lionel at public auction. I wanted American Flyer. I now have
learned alot more about trains, and have a large S gauge layout (that
I am happy with).
If there would have been an S gauge steam loco starter set at that
store for about $275-$325 I would have saved alot of money over the
years, and had alot more time enjoying S gauge.
