Ken,
Somewhere I have a chart. The 1449/1447 bulbs are small diameter globes,
the other are large diameter. 1449 is a 14v bulb, for loco headlights, 1447
is an 18v bulb for switches, etc. The reason for the 14 V bulb in locos is
that they are seldom run at full voltage, and the smoke unit grabs a lot of
the "juice" so they don't USUALLY burn out.
Now for the problem. The imported 1449/1447 bulbs have bases that are
too "tall" by at least one thread, so they don't fit in locos, etc.!! I hope
this mistake gets fixed soon, as the domestic supply is getting scarce, or
was last time I tried to order bulbs.
