Some barrel loaders have an adjustable worm thrust. A small part
contacts the end of the worm shaft and limits how far forward it can
thrust. This part is held by a small set screw. When the screw is
loosened, the part can be moved in or out to optimize the mesh of the worm
and helical gear. If this is out of adjustment it may contribute to the
noise problem. it can be adjusted while the motor is running.

Cleaning old lubricants out of the gear box, which is not easy, and
lubricating the mechanism will make a huge difference.
