Dear Dan,
The DC only F-7 price of $199.99 vs. the AC/DC Locomatic sound price of $299.95
is the cost of the plug in sound unit that retails for $159.95. The only problem is
if the AC unit has Sound that will not accommodate DC (e.g.. Lionel and AM). They
use the DC polarity difference to activate the horn/whistle or bell. If you operate
these on DC, either the horn/whistle or the bell will be activated all the time
power is to the track. The LocoMatic sound unit can be set for either mode, so when
used with the LocoMatic 10 button controller, you can use either AC or DC and can
control up to 19 functions on you engines (ours use speed, direction, horn, bell,
headlight, Mars light, numberboards, sound off, and new for our F-7s classification
lights - red, white or green).
Watch out about DC power units. Check the "volt-amp" ratings as many are not
very powerful. Classic AC Gilbert engines draw more current than today's DC motors
and may need a bit more power. The MRC 6200 only delivers 60 VA of power. I think
our electronic knowledgeable e-group members will tell you that is not much power
for your needs.
