Filtered means you hang a large capacitor on the DC output to make the
residual AC wave form go away.  For series wound motors the old timers
(like me) used 2000ufd (A big capacitor) to smooth the DC out to
approach battery-like flatness.  BTW, at creeping speeds they run better
with the filter out of the circuit (now called pulse control).
