You can use a bridge rectifier to drop the AC voltage by 1.6 volts and still get AC output by wiring it a special way. The way the rectifiers work, they give a constant volt drop regardless of load. Resistors also give a drop, but its drop varies depending on the load, which is probably not desireable for what you want. Also, you could add 2 bridge rectifiers in series to get a drop of 3.2 volts. I did this with my 16B transformer to lower the 18 volt output of the fixed post. I used a single 25 amp 50 volt bridge rectifier from Radio Shack (part 276-1185). You need to bolt this rectfier to a heat sink or it will get very hot. If anyone is interested, I could post a sketch of how this works.
