Hi,
I like using the old style HO switch controllers for my Flyer switches. They are
three-wire, so I just drop the yellow wire from the switches down to a separate light
circuit that I run from the variable post of a separate transformer set a little low
to save on the bulbs. Actually, I run the black wire from the switches to the common
rail wire, too. That just leaves the red and green leads to run from the HO switch
controllers - and I do that with 14 gauge stranded wire from a separate transformer
that delivers about 20 volts, so the switches really snap fast (but don't hold the
button down for longer than an instant). The HO controllers have no lights to burn
out and work perfectly every time - dirt cheap, too and don't take up much space.
Plus, they can be ganged with only one "hot" wire to one of the controllers. The
controllers don't need to be "grounded" as the black wire from the switches to the
common rail wire suffices. It's about the only thing on my layout !
that isn't pure Flyer - but I figure a control panel is fair game. I believe Gilbert
used some toggle switches on their panels.

Put together my first modular layout under and around the tree this year I had (4) 4
x 8 sheets 0f 1/2" plywood and ran 4 tracks as well as a bunch of accessories. Worked
well but looking to improve for next year. The layout is up 6 weeks a year before the
wife wants the living room back (we have no basements in Texas, and running trains in
a non air conditioned garage during summer is not an option)
On the plywood I laid down felt cloth to simulate snow and nailed my flyer track
down (mostly with roadbed)
Looking for some comments.
Ground covering- since this is put up around Christmas I want to stay with the
Christmas theme. I would like something a bit more realistic than my felt cloth but I
do need something durable as many areas need to be stepped on to assist errant trains.
Linking modules together-Track was secured in place except for a piece closest
to each edge. I would butt modules together and then connect the two pieces of loose
track (one on each module together) Any better ideas.
Controls- exclusively flyer push buttons. They worked fine, but any other ideas.
