My steam engines stink, literally. They are dirty, oily, smelling of lubricants and smoke fluid and streaked with stains. I wipe them down with 3-in-1 oil. When I put my head next to the track and hear and smell a passing Hudson, my heart skips a beat. A friend of mine who likes his Lionels all new and minty said I should clean up my act. Not after I went to all the trouble to make them so prototypical, I won't.
For a while there I had Velcroed small cotton pads to the undersides of my diesels. I soaked the pads in #2 heating oil (same as diesel). The smell got a little too pungent though and the whole cellar stank, so I removed them. I'm planning to install smoke in my diesels like Norm Maunz in New Orleans did. I liked that.
