I did not buy the NYC passenger set. I bought the individually offered freight set powered by a single GP-7 in Rock Island colors with a matching caboose. I was surprised when I picked it up that 3 additional cars had been added, making the train 13 units. It is a gorgeous set in the best traditions of American Flyer freighters. This would have been a Gilbert premium offering in the back of the catalog, something on the order of the Texas & Pacific "Sunshine Special". Gilbert would have offered a double diesel. I plan to buy an AM RS-3 in the same livery to double head with the Geep. I love it. I got my Checkerboard tower at the same time.
The NYC set will probably get a Railsounds B this year. I wouldn't go out of my way to install it in the dummy A. The trucks on the Geep seem fine. The loose fit on the PA's is really inexcusable. You should bark at Lionel for a fix on this rather than modify it yourself. As to the Intermodal cars: this is an old discussion of some length on this list. The cars are indeed 027 bodies with S trucks. The trailers are indeed 1/64th. (proven beyond all doubt by comparison to known 1/64 trucks and trailers.) BTW, most Lionel tractor trailers sold for separate sale are actually 1/64th. The out of scale components are the spine cars themselves, which are too hunky, especially when compared to AM spine cars. The trailers on the AM cars are older, shorter road trailers. The Lionel ones are modern 50 long trucks. At York this year, I bought 2 of these sets, one in Flyer mode and one in Lionel that the owner had converted himself. They all can use a little truck tightening. The topheaviness is inherent in the design. Perhaps a little weight on the down low would help. I will have to experiment with mine. I like them.
