Well, there is only one way you can get AF from Lionel. You have to buy the whole
company. (that is, if they wanted to sell out)
Tell them your interest is AF trains, and they won't sell to you. You would have
to convince them that you are strongly interested in keeping the Lionel going and
stifling AF trains.
After you buy them out you can Mass produce AF trains and ignore Lionel if you
like.

About people only interested in Gilbert trains. I agree, to a point. the point is
there aren't enough Gilbert trains to keep everyone happy. A lot of us would like
Repros. of Gilbert. Better than nothing. I only bought one piece of A gilbert train
in 20 years. It is
not available in my part of the country, We have no hobby shops nearby. The nearest
one charges 20 percent (or more) higher than everyone else for all their products. I
don't buy from him unless I'm desperate.

If I bought out Lionel, I would get permission to get the Gilbert name back. Then
I would make repros. with more detail and can motors. I would make original AF track
along with Pikemaster track (larger curve radius) I would also have rubber roadbed
for
both. I also would come up with materials for a control booth that looks like the
controls for a steam or diesel/electric loco.
