When I was in the machine shop. More than 40 years. You NEVER used motor oil on 
Machinery. The detergent in it
would screw things up. Engine oil is for engines that get hot and have carbon build 
ups and other gunk.
Machines including your trains should have a NON Detergent oil used on them.
