Dear Roy:
Foam will be tried for the next module, but the foam will be in a
'box' with the 'walls' made from lumber.
This section of layout is plywood boards cut four or eight inches
wide supported by legs. There are three levels in this section. The wood
is very much out in the open and it will be hit by a varitity of things
including active children. (They will probably hang from it.) Foam just
would not hold up. Also, the legs are spaced between three and eight feet.
Each board has a rib underneath for strength. (It looks like a wide top
'T'.)
I like boards as I can lean on them, abuse them, drill them, and
drop AF track on them. A module I will be gentle with. (And modules get
hand-laid track with Homasote.) The way I lay and relay and Relay and RELAY
my AF track, foam would be gouged and damaged in minutes.
Foam is also light. In this instance the additional weight of wood
is an advantage.
I also have bridges with hinges. (Bridges for humans to go
through.) Unless I do a complete rebuild with foam sandwiched between wood
'walls', I don't think foam is the right choice.
I will keep thinking about foam. If I do a complete rebuild I might
go with foam. (Then the question becomes 'how do you convert a 4*8 sheet of
foam into 4 and 8 inch strips like a table saw will do with plywood.)

Thanks for the comments about paint. That is what I have been told too.
Thorin

Marty,
I used to live across the street from a professional painter (when he wasn't
playing with trains) and he said no matter what you do to it, you couldn't
keep paint on green lumber. It just has to dry out.
I have not constructed a layout with ply for five years. The last four
layouts I have made or had a hand in making were done with foam. Much easier
to work with for lots of reasons. But I understand it is a little late to be
making that decision now.
Good luck
