The Atlantic Coast S Gaugers started out a 8 members
in the Richmond, VA area 4-1/2 years ago. At our
first show (Richmond GATS) in August 1998, we had 4
corners and about 8 straights. A little over 4 years
later we now have five divisions (Virginia Central,
Carolinas, Washington and Old Dominion, Tidewater, and
Delaware) with a fifth (Atlanta Area) under
development (first show scheduled for March 2003).
Each Division has its own modular layout. Our
Division (Carolinas) now has 50 members, two sets of
corners (one kept in the Charlotte area and one in the
Research Triangle area) and enough modules to make a
40 by 40 foot layout with 2-T modules and a center
run.
All Divisions function without officers, dues,
constitution, or bylaws. Operation is by consensus.
Members contribute time, effort, and many supplies
while show fees/awards are used to make Club
purchases. For example, the Carolinas Division has
had Club skirts (blue with yellow top) made for all
modules and is currently contemplating the purchase of
a used 6 by 12 foot trailer to store modules of those
members who do not wish to take them home after each
show.
Each Division handles meetings differently. Some meet
monthly, some in member's homes, etc. The Carolinas
Dvision meets about 4 times a year, in addition to get
togethers at shows, and met last at the Spencer Shops
(home of the NC Transportation Museum and a national
historical site under re-construction since it was
Southern's loco shop located halfway between
Washington, DC and Atlanta). This location is
somewhat centrally located for the Division, has a
free meeting room, and allows us to see and ride 1:1
scale trains. We also will be operating our modular
layout at their Rail Days in April. Perhaps most
significantly our Division is into making our laout
interactive with the public, and we currently
integrate button boards with a many as 60 buttons for
the public to operate accessories at each of our
shows. We recently voted to participate in 7-8 shows
during the coming year.
All in all, it is a great group of guy and gals (some
members as young as 12) who love to run trains for the
public and demonstrate that S gauge is alive and well.
