To all:
I just got my brand new Lionel aquarium car, painted and lettered
for a combination of the Milwaukee Road, the Zoological Society of Milwaukee
(Formerly the County Zoo), and the Lionel Club of Milwaukee.
It came, of course, with those Lionel three rail trucks. These need
to be replaced with AC Gilbert's finest.
For those unfamiliar with this car, the Lionel Aquarium car consists of a
belt of clear plastic with fish painted on it. The belt goes over two
spools, one at each end of the box-car shaped car. As the car moves, the
belt goes around and around. Behind the belt is a sea background and behind
the background is a single light bulb.
The original Aquarium car, released in the 1950s, had a 'vibrator motor'.
So I was expecting this question to be 'How do you get a vibrator motor to
run on DC?" (That answer is simple. I just wasn't thinking. Create an
inverting 'chopper' circuit with a 555. Not a problem.)
This car does not have the 'vibrator motor'. Instead, it has a worm gear on
one axle which meshes with a larger gear in the middle of the truck. This
gear is attached to the shaft one of the spools is on. Pushing the car
causes the spool to spin and the belt to move. The light bulb is powered
off the other truck.
Has anyone converted a Lionel gear car to AF trucks? Any pointers
you can pass along?
Doug? Joe? Sam? Interested in a challenge? I can provide the AF trucks
if needed.
Thorin
