Chris:
Jute carpet pad is the padding used under carpet, I purchased it
several years ago, don't know if they still make it. It looks like a
course felt 3/8" thick, I cut it in 2 1/2" strips & place it under the
track, one #17 x 1" nail per section, place additional (wood) ties in the
track and ballast with gray (clay) kitty litter or oil dry STP brand,
glue in place with John's Ballast glue. Works real well, keeps the trains
quite and $20 worth of material has taken care of 240' +/-of track. Check
with a carpet store may be a rubber bad will work the same way.

Converting manual switches. Tom Jarcho is correct, I have converted son
manual switches in the past using parts from damaged electric switches,
the main problem is no wire terminals on the manual switches, so I run
the wires up thru the holes for the terminals. Now, I saw the switch
motor housing off, along a curve similar to a section of curves track
then power the switch with a slow motion switch motor, about $12 each.
much easier, cheaper and works better than the original. Switches can be
located closer together.
