Try going to a "real" lumber yard.  They frequently have much better
wood than the chains.  Narrow wood tends to be snaky, it may be cut
from poorer raw stock.  Buy wide pieces, which frequently appear to be
better quality, have the lumber yard rip them lengthwise to your
desired width.
